Concrete vs. asphalt driveway: which is better?

Updated November 6, 2026 · Sources cited below

Short answer

Asphalt is usually cheaper up front at about $7–$15 per square foot versus $8–$20 for concrete. Concrete lasts longer, about 27.5 years on average and 30–40 years with good care, versus 15–30 years for asphalt. Pick asphalt for the lowest upfront cost, and concrete for lifespan, low maintenance and decorative options.

Concrete, per sq ft installed$8–$20[1]
Asphalt, per sq ft installed$7–$15[1]
Typical concrete drivewayaround $6,400[1]
Typical asphalt drivewayaround $5,258[1]
Concrete lifespan≈ 27.5 years avg, 30–40 with care[1]
Asphalt lifespan15–30 years[1]

Cost over time

Asphalt's lower upfront price is real, but it needs periodic sealing and wears out sooner. Concrete costs more to install but usually lasts longer with less maintenance. If you plan to stay in the home for decades, concrete's longer life often makes up the difference.

Looks and options

Concrete can be colored, stamped or finished with exposed aggregate. See thestamped concrete cost guide. Asphalt is black and stays that way.

Frequently asked questions

Is concrete or asphalt better in a hot climate?

+

Both work. Asphalt softens in prolonged heat and can show tire marks on the hottest Georgia afternoons; concrete stays rigid but needs proper curing when poured in summer. Concrete also stays cooler underfoot because it is lighter in color.

Can I put concrete over an old asphalt driveway?

+

Generally the asphalt is removed first so the concrete sits on a proper compacted base. We assess the existing driveway at the estimate.
